Greek Hoplite Shield (aspis) with Owl Motif

This was my first try at making a hoplite shield for reenacting. The method I used was based off of the instructions found at Matthew Amt’s Greek reenacting website.

As a result it’s very sturdy, and a bit heavy. The arm band (porpax) is made entirely from brass. The owl design is based upon an Athenian coin and designs from pottery.

For more pictures of the construction process, check out the other shield builds in the gallery.

Aspis is 36″ (91.4mm) in diameter, and weighs 16 pounds (7.25kg).
