I found a bag of plastic spaceships at the dollar store (I think they’re party favors) which were perfect candidates to be painted up as cruiser warships. The tiny fighter craft are from an old Buck Rogers boardgame I found online (I think a bag of 100 was around $9 USD).

The asteroids and planets are made from styrofoam. I added flying stands from EM4 Miniatures. The play mat is just a sheet of black poster board. I misted spray paint from a distance to give it some nebulae, then flicked wet white paint with a brush from 3 feet away to make the stars.
