Greek Aspis (hoplite shield) with Snake Motif

Another domed hoplite aspis I built for 5th century BC Greek reenacting.

Wood core, covered with fabric, brass furniture, sheep hide, rope, and leather. Hand cut and hammered snake blazon made from brass, patterned after a design on a Greek vase (bell krater). Blazon attached to shield using tiny brass nails.

I also constructed a shield apron (parablema), designed to protect the legs from sling bullets and rocks. Built using 4-ounce veg-tanned leather, also decorated to match the design on the krater. Designs painted using ink.

For more images of the steps in constructing the shield, check out the other shield builds in the gallery. Finished shield is 36 inches in diameter (91.44cm). With the parablema attached it weighs exactly 13 pounds (5.89kg).
