Greek Hoplite Aspis with Chariot Wheel Motif

The chariot wheel is a commonly depicted shield blazon on Greek pottery. The design for this shield was based upon a trophy vase (Panathenaic). On it, Athena is depicted holding a shield decorated with a chariot wheel.

The blazon was made from brass, and hammered with reliefs to match a chariot wheel image on the underside of an oon (egg-shaped) pottery. Shield materials are birch, linen, horsehair, leather, and brass.
